JEFF TOBES MEMORIAL 15TH ANNUAL 20 MILE HISTORY WALK
PRESENTED BY THE SONOMA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
    May 4
    , 2019

Sonoma County History walks in the past have included Sonoma State Beach to Occidental, Petaluma to Tamales, Sebastopol to Monte Rio, Sonoma, Plantation to Fort Ross, Petaluma to Santa Rosa, Healdsburg to Cloverdale, Santa Rosa and several in San Francisco.
Jeff Tobes started the walks with the thought of sharing history of an area with a group of people while walking in the actual location to view the sites. He started by taking his middle school students on walks to explore the local environment highlighting geography and history. Then with the support of the Sonoma County Historical Society he included adults in his adventures.
The walks start usually at around 6am, depending on the location and if buses are used. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided as well as the support vehicles that carry all the packs, food, and water. We even bring portable bathrooms on a trailer for the walkers. We have had upwards of 115 adventurers in the past.
We give short dissertations on local events such as the Bear Flag revolt. We also do a “Then and Right Now” with pictures. As we walk and come to a location where we have a old picture of a historic site, someone will show the picture in a way so that all the walkers can walk by and look at the picture (Then) and look at the current view behind (Right Now). A short statement will be written on the back of the picture so that the holder can pass on that information to the walkers as they walk by.
The society website (sonomacountyhistory.org) has information and enrollment forms for the upcoming walk. Updates for the walk are emailed to previous walkers and are also on the website. The cost includes all meals, support vehicles, history, and buses. All proceeds from the walk go into the History Day fund in the name of Jeff Tobes for high school students that are participating in History Day events.
If you enjoy walking even a little bit and if you enjoy nature and history, you will enjoy this walk. The next walk is May 4, 2019. It will be entirely within Petaluma and will include all the historic hatcheries, chicken pharmacy’s, heritage homes, and a wonderful stroll down D st. and more . Visit the website for more information. Donations and sponsorships are available; please donate by using the donation feature on the website. For $50 or more we will include your business card on the map and website, simply complete the registration form for walkers and note the steps for business card sponsorships. A tee shirt sponsorship is also available for $750 and your logo shall be enlarged and placed on the back of the tee shirt, please contact Ray or Jessica for more information and remember we are a 501c3 organization and all proceeds from the walk shall be added to the Jeff Tobes History Day fund. Volunteers are also needed to drive 2 support vehicles, and a truck and driver to tow the portable bathrooms.
